SANGRÍA - AN EXCELLENT SPANISH DRINK

WHAT IS SANGRÍA?

blog

There are drinks that we are used to so much, that we don’t even think about how they were prepared for the first time, long time ago.

What I mean is that these drinks have become a common, ‘automatic’ part of our everyday lives. Obviously, we know what to drink in summer - e.g. sangría. However, we do not stop and think about its origins

Almost everyone likes sangría, and it is easy to understand the reason – a refreshing drink, with many kinds of fruit and a bit of alcohol , specifically red wine. Sangría (as we know it today) comes from Spain. If it didn’t come from Spain, we wouldn’t be talking about it now.

Sangría (as we know it today) comes from Spain. If it didn’t come from Spain, we wouldn’t be talking about it now .
Sangría is the fusion of red wine, various kinds of juices, sparkling water, soda, brandy and fruits. You can also add species (e.g. cinnamon), ice cubes and fresh fruits.

The preparation of sangría is perfect – it does not matter how you do it, your goal is to be the party soul, thanks to sangría preparation. In the ancient Rome, it was common to drink wine mixed with water. Why? In those times, it was believed that alcohol would kill all the germs that the water contained.

Children also used to drink wine, especially when water was so dirty that it could not be consumed on its own. Gradually, the wine drinking tradition came to Spain. The Roman Empire influenced the Iberian Peninsula significantly (in terms of Latin, religion, Romanian roads etc.) and brought the wine drinking tradition as well.

So, when the wine got to the Iberian Peninsula, it was called ‘sangría’, because of its red colour (‘sangre’ means blood). Step by step, sangría became popular in other countries, such as France and England, where it was prepared with French grapes. Nowadays, we know sangría as a drink with specific ‘charisma’.
